I miss having flower gardens. I moved from a home to a 2nd flr aprtmnt. with a small very small deck. Pretty much just a fire escape size deck. I can have flower boxes. But it just does not seem the same. Please help me with ideas as to how I can create a unique focal point for others to see and color to make me happy

Joanne, a second floor apartment may not be a home with a yard, but it still offers plenty of opportunity for impact and color. Take a look at this wonderful balcony I spotted in Perugia, Italy, last summer. It definitely makes the most of its size.

Joanne, I would add hanging pots, pots on the ground, a birdfeeder, and I would also add a solar water fountain if you can swing it. Those are so nice. I love the soothing noise mine makes.

If you have a wall on the side of the house off your deck hang an outdoor fun clock and maybe add some other type of wall decor with some twigs attached to the wal or deck railing as decor. You can plant flowers in decorated PVC with holes cut in it (stand the PVC upright/glue to a flat cheap base -fill with dirt and push plants through the holes so it give you 'towers' of flowers and color! Alternate the PVC towers with different heights for depth. Get a rain gutter and cut into 2 foot strips (3 strips)..attach the three gutters with chains and hang if possible from deck railing or roofline and fill the gutters with dirt and plant flowers -
