Smoky End Table Makeover

While driving home from church one Sunday my husband and I spotted an end table at the side of the road. We picked it up and put it in the back of our SUV. Then we noticed that it smelled... like cigarette smoke. I was a little hesitant to take it home at that point because I wasn't sure that I could get the smell out but I was able to using a few tips I read online. We also made the chair over to go more with our style.
To begin the process we cleaned the table really well. I just used some all purpose cleaner and water for that part.
Then I covered each surface with baking soda and let it sit for some time. Like a couple days.
Then I would rotate the table so that I could put baking soda on other surfaces I hadn't done (Like I would lay it on its side so that I could put baking soda on the side, on its back to do the back, etc)
Next I primed it with a stain and odor blocking primer.
I finished it off by painting it a shade of blue that I found in the mistint section at Lowes and then painting it with a clear coat of poly. I also cleaned and spraypainted the handles. Initially I was just going to replace them but they were an unusual size.

  • Thanks for sharing. That's great to know about the odor blocking primer. I've passed on pieces before because they smelled bad! I'll try this next time.
