Make Your Own Lego Coat Rack

If you have a child or used to be one, then you understand their irrational love for all things Lego. You also understand that sometimes children have a hard time picking up after themselves, which was the case with my kids. After picking up their coat for the 843rd time, I knew that I needed to create a coat rack just for them.
All you need for materials is a 1x6 board, a 3/4 dowel, and coat hooks. You'll also want to use a tape measure, square, and pencil to mark parts on your board. First I needed to determine how long I wanted the rack to be. Since my board was already cut to 48 inches, I decided that my coat rack would be 48 inches.
Cutting the dowel can be a little tricky. You are only cutting half inch pieces, but you are cutting a lot of them, so they have to look similar. The best way to do that is to use a scrap piece of wood and clamp it to your miter saw fence. Each piece then should be the exact same size.
These dowel cuts will be the Lego pegs so depending on how many pegs you want will determine how many cuts you need to make. A little light sanding to take the ripped edges off and the peg pieces were done.
I taped off the different sections to stain them, but I didn't realize how much the stain would bleed. Since sanding the stain off wasn't an option, I decided to cut thin strips of wood and place them over the bleed areas.
To cover the bottom and top of the board, I cut another thin strip of wood and made a simple wood border that I nailed to the board itself.
To put the pegs on, I measured up from the bottom of the board and made a mark so all the pegs would be straight. Then a simple dab of glue on the back and the pegs are in place.
Hang the coat rack low enough for the kids to use, and presto, a coat rack that your kids will actually want to use!

Personally, I think this is one great piece of work. I saw the legos right off...maybe it because I never had dominos, never saw a domino till I was out of the army...I dunno. But regardless, I think this is awesome. :-) Oh, by the way, legos have round circle things that stick UP from the surface... Dominos have RECESSED circles that are painted white against a black background. I thank you Sir/Madam, for sharing this great project with all of us. :-)
