Any uses for about 40 old fashioned assorted handerchiefs?

A neighbor gave me a box full and I have no idea what to do with them.

Valances, a skirt, trim to the bottom of a maxi skirt, ( boho look ) a runner for your table or buffet. Put the squares together and make a square shirt that just is tacked at the top to leave a split sleeve and sewn down the sides with other squares as inserts/gussets. If large enough special occasion napkins. Pillow covers, Make a quilt or throw. Depending on the fabric of the handkerchiefs will dictate what you can and cannot do with them. If you have enough make a coverlet for a bed. this should get you started on thinking about them. Good luck :)

What about a quilt or throw? You could add a border around each handkerchief in one co-ordinating colour. Another idea would be to frame the best ones or use them as cushion covers, with plain fabric at the back.

My neighbor gave me about 100 of them.  I have made only one quilt and that was for her. I like the idea of a valance too.  I know someone who makes batism outfits

Hi,

I would fold them into triangles and make BUNTING! I have seen this done with antimacassars (those crocheted lace doily things) but if each hanky has a pretty bit of lace n it or a flower or initial at the corner, it would make lovely bunting!

My sister used them as a window valance. She used twine for the curtain rod and then hung the handkerchiefs with painted/distressed clothes pins. You can hang as few as you like or more for a fuller valance. Too cute!

Valances for your kitchen with plain white bottom cafe curtain. Sew together several to make a decorative pillow. Sew all together to make a lap quilt.

Fill each with lavender, close tightly with small rubber band, tie a pretty satin ribbon over the rubber band to hide, and use as sachets in your dresser drawers.

A friend of mine color copied her antique handkerchiefs and cut on the diagonal, then Mod-Podged them as a border to her bathroom. She like it so much, we copied more and MP'ed them to the bathroom floor, then put a coat of polyurethane on the floor. So cute for a powder room! Then, she used the handkerchiefs as curtains in the bathroom.

What about a wreath, if you don't have enough you could add square pieces of colorful material, shape like you do the paper in a gift bag.

Starch and gently iron them and frame. They can be changed out seasonally. You can also use them as decor tucked in baskets, etc. I used mine in a table top tree display as a tree 'skirt' this past Christmas. Last but not least, be green and recycle and use them for their intended purpose.
