Glam Up a Raw & Rustic Wood Desktop With French Stenciling

Highstyle Restyle
by Highstyle Restyle
The owner of this antique French writing desk wanted to change the color of this desktop to break up all the dark wood.
The plan was to sand down the top and stain in a lighter shade to give more contrast to the desk.
BUT...after sanding down to bare wood, I discovered the top was poplar. (insert huge sigh). Poplar wood is typically reserved for painted pieces because of the streaky grain it's not easily stained.
Sometimes, the best plans go awry and an even BETTER plan unfolds, which is what happened with this desk. The raw poplar top was so pretty, we decided to glam it up with French lettering (a perfect match since it's a French desk he he he).
