We purchased a fixer upper home and am in the process of updating the half bath right off the kitchen.
As a general rule does the tile in my bath need to match the kitchen? My husband and I can't agree on the best approach.

I wouldn't think it has to match exactly. If you painted the kitchen say cream with navy accessories then do the bathroom navy with cream towels, rug and accessories. What ever colors you use just reverse them in the rooms.

I have worked on several renovations in different houses and my rule of thumb is to use no more than two different flooring options on one floor. For example on the first floor of a two story house: carpet in the family room and hardwoods everywhere else. Or, hardwoods in the family room, dining room, hallway and tile in kitchen and 1/2 bath. They don't necessarily have to match, but it is more cohesive if you do or at least keep them close in color. It is the same principle as having a different color carpet in each bedroom it makes the upstairs rooms look chopped up. Hope that helps.

Matching the bath to the kitchen and the extent in doing so will have a lot to do with just how visible the bath is from the kitchen. If when you open the door and your right in the middle of the room the more you blend and match the better the flow will appear. However, if your half bath is in an out of the way location that when door is opened and you have to squeeze a peek into the room to really see it, then you can change it up a bit more then you would if its easily visible from the room itself. But as Cyndi Moore stated, try to keep things close in color and attempt to match the floor so it blends.

Pictures would help. Though it's nice to have adjoining rooms coordinate I don't feel they have to match exactly. It's all about personal preference in my opinion. Maybe you can compromise. My hubby and I do this all the time when working on our home and it's kept us happy through three builds and a few remodels over the last 33 years. In your case why not use coordinating tiles such as the tile combination shown below in the kitchen with only the smaller tiles used in the bathroom.

Another idea, as we did, is have the floor tile in the half bath match the backsplash in the kitchen. As long as the tile is rated for floors this will work.
