DIY Get RID of those Popcorn Ceilings!

Easy
I LOVE Popcorn, just not on my ceilings! Hiring someone to come in and clear it out, was completely out of the question. So? We DIY'd it! It was easy peasy!
Say 'bye bye' to those popcorn ceilings!

When did they stop making drywall, texture, or compound with asbestos ???

    • @cheryl Your correct about that however even if the product was banned and that the stuff was off the shelves, contractors and home owners alike still have this stuff hanging around in storage. This product which comes dry like a powder has a extremely long shelf life it kept dry. As an inspector of homes I see many unsafe products still stored in homes and garages on a daily basis. The best advice I can and always give to my clients is treat it as it has it, whether it be asbestos, lead or poisoned soils until you test and prove that its safe. At least this way you will remain safe!

We are in the process of removing our stippled texture ceiling and it is much harder than popcorn. It's made of joint compound and the process is similar- spray, scrape. We use a ceiling scraper from Home Depot or Lowe's that you can attach a bag to so it doesn't all fall in the floor (less mess). Unfortunately, after scraping the stippled ceiling you really have to do a few skim coats on it to smooth it out, because it doesn't fall off easy like popcorn and the ceiling looks rough when you're done. It's a lot of work. I soooo wish they had put in popcorn instead of textured, but just as a tip to others the texture process is different. Also we found a cheap shop vac attachment that you can use to sand the ceiling (because after you skim coat you need to sand before you paint) on Amazon. Highly recommend that to avoid dust all over the house.
