Are women better at DIY home improvement?

I came across this article today - http://www.marinij.com/lifestyles/ci_19755953. Basically, among other things, it quotes a DIY Network guy who says women are better at home improvement stuff. I have to say that in my experience, I agree, for the most part. As he says, women tend to be more organized, efficient and clean. I have also found women to be less easily distracted than men, and their better aesthetic eye even makes them better at tasks like mudding drywall. I'm guessing that about half of you agree, but what do you think?

  • I got to say that many of my recent clients are woman. They take on several challenges that used to be the husband or boyfriends job in the past. I think that many men may still have an edge on this world, but the gals are picking up steam fast in this area. They tend to be much more organized and tend to be more efficient on the tiny details then the guys are. But I must say men are still ahead on this curve, but women are gaining fast.

I do fairly well. I'm not afraid to try and I don't over think (like some husbands I know). I use all the tools he does and I am much more detail oriented.

When I was working with other long-term volunteers in the New Orleans area rebuilding homes, the female long-term volunteers and Americorps team members were the best site supervisors (even though some professional union guys from New York said women couldn't be site supervisors).

In our business the paint-hers are known more for their interior detail work. CP
  • Most women are just more patient and more detail oriented when it comes to projects.

The correct answer is "yes" if you are married.
  • Sawhorse, you are just too funny. I know most husbands HATE a honey-do list. To avoid conflict, it is easier figuring out how to do it yourself.

@Kass- I don't mind it. I like for her to keep it to one page though per weekend. I get the boys to help and we knock it out within a few hours. One day I can delegate it to my sons once they are trained.
  • It's "yes" even if you're divorced like me! Most of my business is all about the "honey-do" list!
  • Sometimes it is best to just smile and nod. Seriously, I don't know the answer. There are more men in the business and I would think that to survive, a woman has to be better than most of her male counterparts... this may give the impression that the "average" gal in the business is better than the average guy in it... I flew with a number of female military pilots and I couldn't say if one sex was better than the other......

Hewitt, I can't speak to female pros. I'm not sure I have n ever had a female contractor come work in my home. Then again, I try to do most of it myself, so I haven't had that many men come through the door either. But in the DIY world, women definitely have some advantages over us dudes. Of course, men also tend to be stronger and have some other advantages.

Female engineers tend to make more upon graduation than male engineers. I would attribute this to attention to detail.
  • Greatness has nothing to do with being a man or a woman. We all have infinite abilities, we just have to discover them! Individual visionaries come in both sexes! Oprah and Steve Jobs did not compete with each other they followed their dreams and made the world better! The answer is understanding TEAMWORK.
  • There are right brain thinkers and left brain thinkers. . . some are from Venus and some are from Mars. I think women then to be more right brain so they are more likely to think creatively. That's why your honey-do lists get longer.
