HELP with our UGLY floors!!

Question

Floors in hall and 3 rooms of the addition part of our house are 'school/church house' hard UGLY industrial tile.  Awful.  We cannot afford to cover with hardwood.  Any suggestions?  We do not want carpet (3 kids and a dog)

you would never want to 'cover' tile with hardwood. real hardwood floors are nailed down in most cases...you can't nail through tile.

some folks have installed laminate over tile. but to me I would take tile ( even ugly tile) over laminate any day.

Do you know what is under the tile?...ply sub , concrete slab?

We installed laminate tiles in our kitchen and hallway. You grout them like ceramic or stone, they are very durable and look really nice. More expensive than sheet laminate but less expensive than many hardwood options.

I found a cool idea by someone who did their floor in Paper Bags! I really, really like the look and although it involves some work, it is an inexpensive way in materials to do. Check out the pin for Paper Bag Floors.

The tile is that old school house stuff, it is not ceramic tile.  We cannot remove the tile because of the small, but ever so present asbestos percentage in this tile.  I agree, I hate carpet and would consider tile, bit this stuff is awful!  I will assume sub floor is under the tile, and yet,useless to me.  What ever we do, this stuff needs to be covered.  I thank you for your time.

@Cynthia Coplin it was @Ashley @ Domestic Imperfection that made that post. If you are looking at the kitchen area, you might have to put a few extra coats of verathane on it so it can withstand the traffic. I think you will also need a secondary kitchen set up for a week or more - like move the fridge and/or the microwave into the dining room - of course the barbeque will be helpfull as well. But you and @Shelley Hier are right, it is a beautiful floor and very classy looking. Follow the links through her blog for all instuctions - well worth the read, it includes another blog as well. So this is a Vinyl tile...you can nail through this...to transition to a ceramic tile you could install some 1/4' cement backer board over this, the install the ceramic tile.

This will raise the floor about 3/4' which is height of standard hardwood flooring. Covering asbestos is an 'approved' form of mitigation called encapsulation.
