depends on your definition of small, if they are in sun or shade, and if you intend on watering them or not. Can you share a bit more information with us?

Chickweed, hairy bitter cress and annual bluegrass! (You're supposed to laugh here... they're weeds). Geraniums would do well in almost any environment... Just don't over water them nor kill them with too much sun!

I'm not a plant expert but i have planted Rose Mary in a clay pot and I left it outside since last january and is big now, the best part is that it looks nice and smell great. It has little violet flowers snd is edible.

I have rosemary bushes in a half circle in my front yard surrounding some crepe myrtles and hanging baskets of geraniums. Rosemary plants are definitely survivors. They smell great and I use them in our kitchen cooking... They're um, flexible too! They stay green all year. produce flowers of sorts and found almost everywhere. I saw them in Albuquerque New Mexico growing in landscaped areas of business store fronts. I always know when my outdoor mouser cat has been laying in wait for those birds that perch on the hanging baskets... She SMELLS of herbs! I understand it comes from exotic places in the mediterranean and I know it doesn't take much moisture to make them happy. Way to go CMS... got my attention!

It will also depend on the size of the pot. We have grown roses in large (3ft. diameter) pots outdoors for the past 5 years. A dish garden with pitcher plants and Venus flytraps has grown by the front door in a 14 inch pot for 10 years - getting repotted once. The mailbox sports a pot with pansies, violas, snapdragons and swiss chard. Camellias have survived the past 6 winters in 3 ft. pots on the patio. A contorted pine grows well in a large container - and has been repotted many times over 30 years. A mixed container with a butterfly bush and some bulbs has lasted over 10 years. You just have to remember to water - but it is not as often as it is in warm weather.

Your Location is Atlanta? That is the same growth zone as Memphis and some of the plants mentioned have not survived here, but the Rosemary and Camilla have lived on the porch (no cover) in pots for about 10 years, The Geraniums die during the winter even if moved into the garage where we keep it above freezing during the winter. Also I have Clemantis that have lived outside for 10-15 years and are just fabulous every year....they like their feet to be cool and their head in the sun...being viney climbers...so they are perfect for a pot on the porch where the front facade offers a little shade at ground level and their vines can climb the wall to their hearts content...Also Hen and chicks do fabulous in pots of all sizes, and despite getting snowed on, will multiply and thrive if you just give them good drainage and a little water during the driest parts of the summer...

I have clay pots on my deck. Nothing ever seemed to survive the heat during the summer. Then I tried "Autumn Joy" and "Hens and chicks". Have plenty of green all summer long.

My succulents have all done well in pots outside. I have a Japanese maple in a large pot which is going strong at 5 years. I love needlepoint ivy and grow it in tall urns to keep it corralled, it is invasive if planted in the ground.
