Good Morning Folks! I would like to know how to clean a broom. I have a corn broom that I always store upright but want to know if I need to clean and condition it? Thanks for inputs~~~Diane

My grandpa made corn brooms years and I used to watch him. He never said anything about conditioning them.

I 've had the same corn broom for close to 20 yrs. and have never done anything special to it, except as you said always store it up right. I remember my Mom had one and for some reason the bottom stitching was coming undone and she cut a sock in half and used the top part and slid it down over the handle. It stayed like that for many years.

The sock trick is great. Also prevents scratches when you sweep snow off your vehice

if you didn't want to store it upside down.. drill a hole in the Handle about 1 inch from the End big enough to hang on a Nail or Hook or Wood Pegs and put it so it hangs at least 4 inches off the Floor. or put a String or Leather Shoelace through the hole allow enough room to hang it up and tie a knot in it and Cut off excess... You could wrap more String or Leather lacing around the Broom part too to match... You could still have room on the Tip of the Handle for the Rubber cap too..

I have read that when you first get brooms they should be soaked for a period of time in water and let dry naturally. If mine gets dirty I definitely wash it in the laundry sink w/a little dish washing detergent--spray rinse it and let it dry naturally.

Mine is a work horse that sees some serious nasty action outside. I wear mine down to the nubs and then just replace it with a new one.
