Looking for the perfect teacher's gift for under $10? No need for being an expert crafter, anyone can do this! Check out this step-by-step tutorial to make your own! http://gatheredinthekitchen.com/diy-hand-painted-wooden-pencil-door-sign/
Start by using a piece of 1/4" plywood (that can be purchased at any hardware store). The size is completely customizable. You can make it however big or small you want it. Using a pencil draw the outline of the pencil on the wood. Using your jigsaw cut along the lines and cut out the pencil.
Using fine grit sandpaper sand all of the edges and make them smooth.
Using a drill and drill bit pretrial two (2) holes at the top of the pencil - this is where the wire will go to hang on the door.
Next up is the fun part, PAINTING!! There is no right or wrong way. Just have fun and make the pencil however you like it! We used acrylic paint because it is permanent.
Use 16 gauge wire to make the door hanger. I twisted the ends on the front of the pencil and twisted it around pliers to give it a cute coiled look.
Then it's time for the bow! I used wired burlap ribbon and fun colored ribbon. In order to make the fun colored ribbon curly I had to wrap it around a large wooden dowel rod and baked in the oven at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Scrunch all of your pieces of ribbon together and tie together with the 16 gauge wire for the hanger (you can also use pipe cleaners or twisty ties). Once the bow is complete secure it to the hanging wire by twisting the wires together.
And there you have it! So easy! So simple! So cheap! and Sooo didn't take a long time!

I'm a retired teacher...and a bit bored!!! My former district has an "Adopt a Teacher" program. I adopted a former co-worker and would love to make this for her! I'm not very crafty, but I'm sure that I could make this! However, I'm just not sure that I could do the lettering. Did you actually paint the name of did you use vinyl stickers?

    Thanks!!!
