Fluorescent light in the kitchen

Question

We have a big fluorescent light in the middle of our kitchen. If we just take it down, we have ceiling repairs and painting to do. Can we make pedant lighting from the base somehow?

I had mine taken down and the guy wired 6 can lights for me and capped the electrical outlet for the fluorescent light. Painted the ceiling and it looks great!

What if you remove the light, attach the 'tin look' backsplash type tiles, put a frame around them and then replace the light? Not sure if this makes sense. I had one of those huge oak trimmed ones in my tiny kitchen. I did have it removed, then patched and sanded the holes, painted the ceiling, and had just a regular fixture installed. You can hardly tell where the other light was.(And it is an old house!)
