I used an old tv/record console after putting it up on a self built box platform then gutted it,placed shelves in it and painted it chartreuse Green and then eggplant on top and distressed it. My previous landlord liked it so much they paid me and asked me to leave it.

You could use a rolling cart or even a table with a shelf underneath it and add stackable crates to house and display your cookbooks. Or, you can place small bookcases back to back and secure them together and add a piece of butchers block as the top. That way you'd have storage shelves on both sides. Adding casters would keep it mobile if you wish to move it out of the way.

Please post a photo when you're done with your island. When we had our kitchen updated, the builder used lower cabinets placed back-to-back and then placed our countertop on it. It doubled our island space and I am so pleased. Book shelves are a great "go to" item for so many projects. Best Wishes!
