Which solution of knife storage would you choose?! Or is the typical block on the counter top still serve best? Some of these are custom solutions, others can be easily retro fitted into a current application

I'm still a big fan of the block on the countertop. It works well for me. I think I'm too clumsy for some of these other solutions. The wall magnet would just make me nervous. I like the pullout drawer with the standing knife block, though. That's a cool option. Also, this reminds me of a Wiltshire knife set my mom had when I was growing up. It's an Australian company that developed self-sharpening knives. They slide in and out of tight, sharpening slots, so they are sharpened every time you pull them in and out. Not sure why this never took off more widely.

This is a good question. While I like the block on the counter, I've found out that it's best to get a block that comes with a set of knives. As it stands, I have about 3 different blocks will all sorts of knives and I can't seem to fit a group together within a block. It's a mess. If I had the space, I'd dedicate an entire drawer to knives such as that drawer insert. I'm looking for a way to organize that one kitchen drawer where ladles, spoons, big utensils, spatulas, nutcrackers, etc all are combined with no place to go.
  • keep my knives in a drawer lying on a magnetic,,, having a nicked or dull knife is a sign of a sloppy cook to me
  • I love knives and i am a bit obsessed about them, but I like the third feature the best since they are hidden, The second option scares me.

Only 3 knives are really needed in the kitchen, I use Ginsu for steak knives for everyday dinner knives as I can just put in dishwasher. I like the slit countertop, just wonder about spills going in there? I don't like magnetic holders. Drawer or small block is best. If anyone does drawer, be sure to child proof it if you have little ones.

A long long time ago...when I first got my table saw the very first project I built was a knife block...back then I had some not so great knives. I am now swapping out the not so great with some fine Wusthof ones. As fancy and pricey as some of those are one of my most used and favorites is a "hunting" type knife that I got on ebay for about 4 bucks...with shipping. Its not super pretty with a red plywoody type grip but the blade is thick and the balance is great. The blade has a little curve so it not the best at veggie slicing but it can break down a chicken in no time.

I've got the drawer block as well as the block that sits on the counter. I use the knives from the counter block since they are easy to get to. My mom gave me a Wolfgang Puck Santoku knife set of 3 knives that sit in a wooden block. The top is a cutting board and slides off the top to reveal the knives. I guess I've just got knives everywhere. @steve G that Wiltshire set sounds like a great idea. Nothing more frustrating than a dull knife. @Jeff C, you should check out the Kapoosh knife block. It is supposed to accommodate all sorts of knives in the same block. It doesn't have pre-cut slots but a grouping of narrow pegs that move to allow for whatever is pushed into the grouping. Hard to explain but kinda cool to see in person. I've attached a pic.

Personally, I like the drawer block which is what I have right next to stove and island as I like to keep all the tools/cooking equipment hidden and the "pretties" on the counter tops.

I like the cabinet door block. Neat. A tip for keeping your knives in good shape: always lean your knives against the top side, to keep a chip free, sharp edge on the cutting side .

I love the magnet strip...on the wall in handy reach when needed..not adding to counter clutter.

Oh and the magnet strips from hardware stores for tools are less expensive and work as well or better.

I use half circle wall pockets with 1" to 1 1/2" plastic pellets (beans) in bottom so knives or ??? Doesn't slide around. (Beads do not dull blades), sharpening whetstone hangs on wall beside pocket. I use these half circle pockets for spatulas, tongs & forks, cooking spoons etc.

An old dishwasher silverware basket sorts & holds eating silverware. These 2 storage methods free up a lot of space & storage. I only have 3 very small drawers in kitchen.
