My sink is clogged, BAD!!

Question

My son poured hot grease down the kitchen sink! I tried Draino (?) and nothing happened, plunging is useless! HELP!!

Hi Linda

Start by letting the hot water run in that side of the sink. If it starts to back up, start running it in the other side (just guessing this is a double kitchen sink?) the hot water should help get the grease moving along. I have used baking soda and vinegar to dislodge a plugged sink too. Pour baking soda down the drain followed by white vinegar. Yikes it'll foam and possibly back up into the sink but at least it is a safe non-chemical solution. If all else fails....PLUMBER   Good luck!

pour distilled vinegar and baking soda into sink over drain, it will sizzle. Let it sit about 5 minutes. Pour lots of boiling water into drain. You may have to repeat the process a few times.

Try pouring Dawn dish soap down the sink, put the stopper in and fill with hot water. Leave in the sink long enough to dissolve the grease.

Try pouring boiling water down the drain or you can try heating up the drain pipe with a hair dryer...may take you a while though! :-)

I use oxy-clean and boiling water. Fill up the top of the drain with oxy-clean and then pour in an entire kettle of boiling water. Sometimes a repeat is required, but it is non-toxic and I have had success with this method in multiple locations.

Do you have a garbage disposer ?If you do,you will need to plug up that line or if you have more than one sink.I have used a zipper type piece from Home Depot for my bathroom faucet.It cost about 3.00,it bends and you push it down the drain as far as you can,twist it and pull out,pulls out all kinds of crap! They say to dispose it,but I kept mine in a plastic bag for another emergency.Just don't use the piece in the kitchen and the bathroom.you do not want to contaminate the kitchen pipes with bathroom germs.Yuck!(e.coli).

it is my belief that a combination of vinegar, baking soda & dawn dish soap, will clear most any drain. it will just take time to work though. 
if all else fails, take the pipes apart & clean them out or replace them....
again, taking apart the pipes is a last resort.

We had a similar problem but with rice thrown in the mix. The rice expanded and mixed with the grease. It would have cost us $100 for the plumber to step in the door. So we went to the hardware store and bought a snake with a crank (auger) for about $ 15-20. It worked wonders. Then we flushed everything out with with baking soda vinegar and boiling water from the kettle (which we had tried 1st, but made a bigger mess). That thing ended up being a blessing in disguise, and has bailed us out of plumbing messes (pardon the pun) many times. A plumber once told me to pour 1 cup bleach down the drain then wait 10 seconds, and pour a large pot of very hot ( almost boiling) water down the drain.  Follow by running hot water for two minutes.  If this doesn't work the first time, repeat the process again!  Good luck!Help answer this question...

Thanks everyone!  I tried almost everything! Ended up calling a plumber, it was SO BACKED UP, he had to run a snake thru clear to the back of the house!!
