Mary Insana on Apr 24, 2013I'd go with chalk paint and if it would fit in your décor a stencil design on the top or a border of stencil along the top edge near the lid. If stencils don't go with your décor and you want a more modern look, a few stripes next to each in different widths in a color close(lighter ) to what you paint it. You can take a little chalk paint with flat white paint to make 3 different shades of your original color by adding different amounts. Divide a small amount of your original color into 3 different containers and add different amounts of the white to your paint for a monochromatic look. I save small margarine containers and the plastic icing containers with lids for my mixing.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Apr 24, 2013being a wood guy I put in a vote for stain for the parts that are still holding together...a mix of paint and stain would really set it apart from the mundane. Rather than a big tub for ice, a smaller ice bucket would be best...a large tub will be heavy and the ice will cause condensation which can lead to water damage.Helpful Reply

Kathy Owen | Petticoat Junktion on Apr 24, 2013paint! Although I paint with milk paint, chalk paint and other paint products you can just use plain old latex paint and shabby it up by distressing by hand or with a sander.Helpful Reply

Gail Salminen on Apr 24, 2013@Kimberly C how about the best of both worlds! I think the wood is absolutely gorgeous. If you painted all but the top and sanded and stained (even in a tinted stain that would go with your shabby chic colour) that part it could be a very striking piece. I have a feeling that it will be a very striking piece regardless of what you do. It is a wonderful find. Thanks for posting :)Helpful Reply

Kimberly C on Apr 24, 2013I think I'm going to do the dual thing, paint and stain, I'm putting this in my booth at an Antique Mall & I need to consider the genre that shops there, if it were for me personally I'd paint, thanks for all the wonderful input I will definitely post when done.Helpful Reply
