  • Ernestine, can you tell us what city or area you live in so we can maybe offer suggestions on local places to get appliances?
  • Appliances differ greatly. Its very hard to compare even those with same price tags. Also some folks have great luck with one brand while others cannot rid themselves of them fast enough. You need first to determine what you want the appliances to deliver to you. Are you looking for high efficiency? What about ease of cleaning? Stainless can come in all sorts of finishes. So that is an important one. Do you have kids that stand in front of the fridge when choosing a beverage? Perhaps a fridge with a mini door just for that. What type of cooking do you do. Are we going to see you someday on a TV show making something, or are you one that simply burns water when making a boiled egg? I could go on, and many hear know I can. But you get the picture on this. Once you really know what and how these appliances need to serve you, you then can choose products that will fit your bill. Also do not forget thinking about how long you plan to stay in the home. The longer you plan on being there, the more expensive the product would end up being if you wanted to get as much use out of it that you can. Value plus home value plus your personal needs along with all the bells and whistles will determine what brand you will be buying. Good luck let us know how you make out!

I would recommend spending some time at your library looking at Consumer Reports. That will help you get started with good recommendations for each product. Also keep in mind that many companies have been consolidated, so a lot of different brands are really made by the same handful of companies. I know I am really happy with my LG fridge, but I have only had it for less than 2 years.
  • Bosch, Wolf, Frigidaire are a few.

I have a number of clients who swear by their LG's

Love Samsung. Bosch is good as well.
  • We have had really good experience with KitchenAid appliances - they have great features at a reasonable price. Electrolux also has great a great product line that is a step up from KitchenAid. You will want to visit and appliance store in your area so that you can get some input based on your needs and wishlist though. Several of my appliance contacts encourage us to stay away from LG and Samsung in our area (Raleigh, NC) because replacement parts can take weeks and months to arrive and there are very few people who service either of them.

thank you. What do you think about Frigidaire.

If you live in NJ I am sure they have the Great Indoors. It is a good place to look every kind and brand. They have very Europian style as well. I am from Europe and Bosch, Miele... are very popular there. Very good quality and work forever. Well, they made in Germany. I cannot really tell what you buy here there weren't made in some kind of third world country. I don't mean they don't make good product but German engineering something China, India...cannot beat.
  • They had a Great Indoors not to far from where Ernestine lives at. But it closed last year. Simply not enough sales. It was a great store however.

My appliance repair man swears by Whirlpool.
  • Whirlpool. Sears, Tempstar, and a few others is exactly the same product with just their name tags changed and a few custom colors done by each name brand. All manufactured out of the same plants. The primary reason these guys like them most of the parts are universal so they do not have to stock to many parts in the truck and when they do not have them they are easy to obtain.
  • From what we have seen Frigidaire is another great brand out there that offers a good number of options at reasonable prices.

I have a house full of Kitchen Aid products. Would never buy another one. Google complaints on this brand and you will wonder, like I do, how in this world they are still allowed to sell them. I have a range that the control panel has been replaced.. it is still giving me trouble. A microwave that came on during the night. That panel was replaced. Was cooking bacon one morning in that microwave and the vent shot off into the middle of the room and broke in two. The dishwasher spring in the door broke and sounded like a shotgun going off. There is like around 650 complaints against them. I believe them because I have lived through this nightmare. According to the listed complaints, fires have caused deaths from these appliances. When I called the company about this microwave coming on in the middle of the night, they had a repairman here the next morning. Before buying, please read these complaints and check this all out.

@Fannie Mae I didn't finish my complaint about Kitchen Aid appliances and hit the wrong button on this compute and am sorry you didn't get the rest of my complaint. Just google and you will understand why I am afraid of these appliances. A mother and 2 kids burned up because a range caught their house on fire. I have a refrigerator that is the only thing there is no problem with. I am going to write all this to the Better Business Bureau. I am a widow and am the only person to use these appliances. F. M. I would not recommend anything from Sears. We did a major kitchen renovation a few years ago and replaced all our appliances with the stainless steel Pro line from Sears. Our old appliances were from Sears 20 years prior and still worked GREAT. Alas the new ones were nothing but trouble in just a year. The refrigerator leaked ruining our new cork floor. The seal came undone and a glass shelf shattered for no apparent reason. The dishwasher rack has rusted in spots and the lights no longer track the process of the cleaning. A few weeks ago the door spring broke. It has increasingly gotten louder over the past two years. The oven heating element needs to be replaced and the knob coverings have melted in spots. All this has happened within 3 years of purchase - after warrantee, of course! Grrr! My friends bought Bosh and Viking and shake their heads at my folly. Ours were high end and totally disappointing, as was the customer service and repairs. We will be replacing as soon as we can afford to.

I agree with the above post...Bosch for dishwashers and Whirlpool for everything else! We just replaced our microwave after 17 trouble-free years of use!

I agree with Debby. Bosch for dishwasher and range and Whirlpool for everything else. I have this combination and love them.

We bought a package of GE all four appliances. Bad idea! The dishwasher leaked from Day 1 and within 6 weeks the microwave burnt out. We are still battling them 6 mos later. The old GE is not the same company today. Very disappointed 4 thousand dollars too late!! Say NO to GE!!

I have been a homemaker for 55 years. The only appliance I have ever used is a Frigidare (sp) and the trick is, only buy the basic appliances (no bells and whistles). In all of these years I have only replaced my appliances 2 times.

I always go to Consumer Reports and read about the reliability of various brands of appliances. They don't accept advertising, so their reviews are impartial. They also point out useful features and annoying issues as well.

I've had GE and Kenmore and wouldn't recommend either one, although the dishwasher is over 10 years old and still going.
