Mixing Ashes into your Garden mulch/soil

I am mixing my composted soil with my mulched soil (clippings, leaves etc) and i wanted to know if ashes are actually good for your garden or not, and how much to add. also if my backyard burning barrel (from household burnables) ashes are ok to mix in. does anyone know? and how much to add?

From a fireplace / fire pit where you use natural wood - yes, including the charcoal looking pieces that are left Elsewhere - I wouldn't risk it

It depends on the composition of your soil in the first place. Adding too much can make your soil dense and more like clay.

To add to what Cristina Norlin said you need to check the soils PH. Adding ash will change the chemical make up of the soil and depending upon the type of plants you are using this may not be a good thing.

Wood ash will increase your soil's pH. It's always best to do a soil test before making amendments.

bio char is a bit like ash...and its use can improve soil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biochar However, ash from a "burn barrel" will contain dioxins and a manner of other items due to the source material being used. http://www.ipen.org/ipenweb/documents/work%20documents/incineration_ash.pdf
