Depends for who you are decorating the room. If for yourselves, go for colours you love and you cannot go wrong. If you are selling your home and want a wider appeal, a soft grey can be quite sophisticated and neutral at the same time. Then most colours will go well with grey and can be added in the form of linen, throws, curtains, pillows etc.

I agree with grey. There are lots of great silvery and warmer-looking shades on the market... gone are the dull flat, utilitarian, builder greys. After painting a room that colour for a teenaged boy, we ended up liking it so much, that we chose similar tones for our room Another way, would be to choose some modern bedding/ fabric that you love and pulling a colour from it. I watched a designing show called CityLine (said episode: designer Ray Staples) years ago, and I believe House & Home had a similar message as well. If you are not sure what colours are modern and in, and look good, they suggested to look at popular magazines covers on display (accessories/background/font). The covers usually pick elegant/modern colours. They also show colours that go well together. I have found this to be consistently true. So for teenagers, look at teenage covers, for fashion/ decor pick those types, car magazines for guys etc.

It's really a matter of your personal preference and the size of the room. I'd stay away from darker colors, especially if it's on the smaller side. It may sound boring, although I personally like white, as it's apparently the "in neutral" but I enjoy the crisp, clean, and bright feeling it brings. I prefer to use come color in my accessories, such as bedding and artwork.

Choosing colors for a room is of personal taste, however it also depends on the size of the room, lighting, and color of furniture.I personally have a large bedroom and choose a soft taupe for a large wall and accented the balance with a soft grey color. This way I have the option to change the linens all through with an assortment of color.

For smaller rooms I'd keep the wall colors light but for larger rooms a more dramatic darker color might be striking. Furnishings and bed linens would influence any choice but I am particularly fond of blue and so our master bedroom is painted a very soft blue with white woodwork.

Hey Stefan! This is what I did when I decorated my master bedroom. First I picked out the comforter that I absolutely loved, I happen to adore roses and that was what I picked. I chose the less dominate color from the comforter and had the paint store mix me the color. End of story, my walls are a light terracotta with accents in sage green and a dark terracotta for the curtains. That was 16 years ago and I still love the color. Don't be afraid to use the darker colors. You can get small samples that you can paint on the walls and actually see what they look like before you commit to doing the whole room. End note: if you find a dark color you love but it's too dark, the paint store can tone it down for you. Good luck, have fun, and BE BOLD!!!!

I am really sold on the grays lately, esp the more metal-flavored ones in dark. Ready to change from my sage colors to these spectacular gray with a stark white trim. Unless you are ready to make a color statement in optional bold colors

Lately, I'm liking Sundrenched Sand @ WalMart. and I like Ancient Marble @ Sherwin Williams . The first one is a very light cream color, the second is a soft shade of green. Both are neutral tones and you can add any other complementary color to brighten your room. Just have fun. Step outside the box and enjoy!
