Can I mix corian and granite in my kitchen?

I have corian on my countertops, but want to change just the island counter top to granite. Should I try to match color or should I go totally different in color? The corian is very pale in color.

This happens more than you would think.....because the corian is Neutral this will work just fine if you stay in the same color family. A tan to beige type granite would look like it matches. I would stay away from the really dark blacks, green, uba tuba types.
  • I cannot match white socks so color advice would not be my thing. But choosing a complementary color I would think would be your best option. But there has been times that I have seen complete opposite color matches with islands and counter areas. And they looked quite nice. It all depends I would think on how much attention you want looking at island. Just remember, once you get the stone in the center, your going to want the rest done later on. For some reason this always happens. But if you purchase a higher end stone for the island now, it may not be available a year later.
  • Yes, go with a contrasting color or you will end up with a "near miss".
  • You absolutely can! Definitely go with a contrasting color and, if your countertops have particulates, you may want to be careful with the granite pattern as well.
  • Absolutely....you can often get a remnant piece at a great discount....and there are some good sources posting here as well. It's a great look...have fun with it

If your existing has swirls or specks of color infused in it... lift one of those colors and use it as the complementary color on your island.

Yes, this is very popular. You will want to hand pick your slab so that it compliments the Corian, the floor and the cabinetry.

You didn't mention whether the island base is the same color as your cabinets or a contrasting color. We love the look of a complementary contrast on the island top.

I would advise not trying to match your Corian. The person who mentioned "near miss" was correct. Either go much darker for a contrast (especially if you have a patterned Corian that stands out) or, if your Corian is less pattern, find a patterned granite that is darker, but contains the color of your Corian in it. That way you can visually tie the two together and it will give the room better visual flow.

Why not as long as it looks good together! I'm not a granite fan myself.

I have a neutral Corian in my kitchen and dark blue in the butlers pantry. It looks great! Granite in the great room on the bookcase and with an open floor plan it all flows very well.
