What would you do with carpeting these stairs?

We are replacing the carpet on the stairs and we aren't sure how we should have it cut out. We have a very large dog so we want to keep carpet on the landing. As you can see there is marble on the foyer floor and past that is hardwood floor that is almost identical to the wood on the stairs. The carpet color that I've chosen is a very light cream. So...what would you suggest ?

I 'm really not sure what I understand what you are asking. Do you want suggestions for something else for the landing? If so I would have a couple of mats cut and bound in the same carpet you are using for the stair Attach double sided tape and when one gets so stained and dirty that you cant clean it anymore you can replace it with another. Or you could get a scatter mat in the same colour as the wood on the [landing] and treads, or in a pattern that coordinates with other things in that area, attach it the same way. I hope this helps

I think I might have gone with something a bit darker! Carpet on stairs look good for about 2 months! I like Jeans idea

Hi Linda With your darker walls and large dog, I would consider a darker yet patterned runner for the middle of each stair tread. It covers the center portion of each step and doesn't cascade down from step to step. Literally just covers the tread. If need be, they can be replaced individually as they wear. Much easier to care for than light carpeting.

I totally agree with Jeans idea of having extra mats made. Personally appearance wise I would just carpet the stairs and leave the landing in the wood and use the mats to aid in keeping the carpet cleaner. No matter what color was chosen carpets get dirty with humans besides dogs. Trust me on that one having four dogs in the house and no children just my husband who always seems to forget to wipe his feet.

Yep, agree with carpeting only the actual stair step. This will leave you room to do something else/interesting on the rise! As for the landing part, I would just use a bigger cut of carpet so it looks more like a small throw rug.

Another thought comes to mind with the stairs and again its just a thought ,however putting another color on a stair way draws attention to it . I do not think choosing a pattern will be in your best interest.

A good carpet man will be able to cover all the stair treads and twist to make the landing and bottom step. I have a light beige carpeting and I have 2 dogs and 3 cats that go in and out constantly and I have had white to beige to dark carpeting and I can tell you that darker the carpet the more dust and light hair. I will recommend that you buy the best pad the carpet place sells. My carpet is 7 1/2 years old and it was builder's grade carpet but i put the best pad and my carpet still looks good. the carpet man can install the carpet the way you have it now too and tuck it to look nice. I would go to the last step too. Your choices are to lay the carpet like you have it now showing some tread and the posts or have them take the carpet and roll it under the tread around the posts. Either way is personal preference. good luck

As a Realtor I see lots of stairs that are carpeted right up to the inside wall as yours are. This makes it very difficult to clean that edge next to the wall. I have advised people to get down on their hands and knees with carpet cleaner and a brush and clean that crack all the ways up the stairs which is a horrible job. I would vote for a neutral carpet either one color or in a coordinating print carpet in a very neutral color (have see some lovely vine prints, or oriental looking runners going up stairs with keeper bars at the back of the step. If your large dogs stay on the landing and sleep then you really need a carpet/ runner that can be treated before the dogs get on it to prevent it from getting so dirty. We all have dog "children" and like children they can be pretty messy and destructive. Just plan ahead.

If the treads are as nice as they seem to be, you could just put the Carpet pads on each step. I used carpet tape to glue mine down, and they have stayed put for over a year now. What's best is I can change them when I decide to change the color or style. The ones I have now look like little rope rugs with a trout fishing design on them.

I would put in carpet runner and keep the wood treads showing on the sides. Animals will slip on wooden stairs so the runner would help with that. However, with your beautiful marble floors, I would change out the white metal railing.

You could put carpet pads down the center of the steps with a small rug on the landing. I'd put those carpet pads on the stairs, and paint the bottom part to match, or tile them with decorative tile. You can get tile decals and they might stick right to the paint without tile. They sell the on Etsy, but they are very busy, Spanish style, so might not be your style. The stairs are real pretty so it would be a shame to hide them under full carpeting.
