Easy
Today I'm sharing a super easy trick for making wood look like slate stone, and using it to transform an inexpensive hobby board into beautiful coasters! Read on to see how easy these were to make, and click over to my blog (www.build-basic.com) to get a free printable template!
1. Size the Coasters and Shape the Edges

For this project, I'm using an inexpensive 1/4-inch-thick hobby board, which you can typically find at any Home Depot or Michael's Craft Store. By tilting the sander on an angle along the edge of the board, I'm creating gouges that make it look like the split edges of slate stone. So easy!
2. Coat the Coasters with Paint

Because slate stone is dark and chalky, chalkboard paint is the perfect lookalike! Coat each coaster with two coats for full and even coverage.
3. Make the Stencils

Using my free printable (Get the link at the end of this post), create stencils using painters tape and a craft knife. Place the stencils onto the coasters, and then mist them with a light coat of spray paint.
4. Remove the Stencils

Finish by removing the painter's tape, and apply a matte clear coat (optional).
What do you think? I just LOVE how the light mist of white creates a texture and contrasts with the chalky black finish!

Coasters collect moisture from glasses, right? How does the wood stand up to it?
