I found this piece of furniture and it's been sitting in my garage until I decide what I would like to do with it...it is very heavy, it looks like a piece to an entertainment center? What would you do with it ?

If it is wide enough I agree on the bar.

office or mail organizer you have the shelf for books or binders the cubby boxes for sorting mail

I'd paint it and mount it to the wall in my kitchen and use it as a coffee, tea, and hot chocolate station. Maybe find or make little bins for the cubbies to sort different kinds of tea.add hooks to the underside of the bottom shelf for cups.

Beautiful piece! If your bathroom is large enough, use it for towels, sheet sets and supplies kept handy in baskets.x. I love the varied sizes of the spaces.

What if you flipped it over, it would look more like a shelf unit, you could put bun feet on it to change the look..then paint it..cute!

I would paint it and put it inside by the front door for shoes, scarves, boots, etc

The piece is actually the top to a dining room hutch: flipping it over would make it more stable as a 'stand alone' unit. You could easily add a new 'top' piece and trim from a home improvement store (they will cut to size for free): look at removing the wine bottle holders. You would have a nice small shelving unit.

How about a bar/ server. it's a great size and the recessed top will keep items from sliding off. Or, create a top with a small over-hang, scaled to the piece out of almost anything that suits your decor. Remnant marble, granite, butcher block - even metal. Paint or stain, so many finishing options out there, to suit your style. The original finish looks pretty good to me. I love the heft of the piece, looks quality. It would make a great looking storing/serving piece, open shelves or add great doors for dining room/area or kitchen. Will you show us your finished product?

I like to turn everything into a bar :) Give it a new top, base, and add feet and you're good to go! Oh, and paint it so it all matches! Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is your best friend for a project like this. NO prepping, just paint over the surface and wax. Can't wait to see the finished product!

If you could get a shelf onto the bottom, and add some lathe turned feet, sand & stain it, it would make a great dining room breakfront with room for wine bottle storage.

Looks like it'd make a good bar to me :)

if your closet is large enough i would put it there and use it for shoes and boots.
  • Linda, it is a beautiful piece! I agree with Elaine, Maine, Brett and Holly. Some kind of bar/server. The square niches could be for wine bottlesor even cutlery. Definitely a remnantstone top. J A chunky base with some wheels…. Roll it tothe party! J

It looks like it may have been a top to a desk or table of hutch. If you are a craft person. You could make a craft station out of it and use it for the top. You could use pressure curtain rods across the top shelf for rolls of ribbons and make it a wrapping station as well. Place and LED strip light on the bottom shelf to give you table/desk to lighting. Think twice about painting. it looks like it could be oak or oak veneer. It would depend on you decor and whether it would go with it. If it is solid oak my tendency wold be to leave it as is I also like the idea of using it as the top of a coffee bar. That would be a great area when you have parties and guests. Good luck on the project. post pics of what you end up with. Always nice to see how people decide on their project.

This looks like my antique Lincoln desk that I bought at an auction in Illinois. This part sits on top of a table and has the cubby holes for bills or office supplies. My desk has a door that covers the cubby holes then flips down and serves as a writing surface.
