Idea to plug hole in terra cotta pot for a dessert

My daughter is getting married next year (rustic/country/outside) wedding. We are making "dirt dessert" in terra cotta pots (not the bitty ones). Every person will get a dessert in this pot but we are being stumped on what to plug the hole up with since food will be in it. Any ideas?

My grand daughter made me a bread warmer out of clay, her teacher set them in the sun to harden.. I think you could do the same with a bit of non toxic clay and let it dry in the sun?Ive had this little piece since 2006, Ill have it forever! Congratulations to your daughter!

I would look for glass or food friendly plastic liner type inserts or I would construct some out of heavy duty, double layered aluminum foil. Have you thought about using the clay pots as sort of a serving tray and inside using small, slightly larger than shot glass size containers for the deserts? My son recently went to a restaurant where they brought out a tray with about 8 different desert flavors on it in small containers...a scoop of ice cream. With cardboard cut to size, you could even stack them inside the pot. There are various sizes of throw away plastic containers you can buy. Instead of the standard tapered clay pot, how about a clay window box? Or uses those saucers in clay that pots sit in? You can get these in various sizes and then use clear plastic drinking glasses to hold the deserts!

Good Ole Martha Stewart has a recipe for baking in Terra Cotta pots and she puts a piece of parchment paper in the bottom! Would that work?

The dirt pudding that you are planning to make uses Oreo cookies so simply place an Oreo cookie in the bottom. However, I like the previous given idea of the cherry as well. It would be like a little surprise in the end. Are you putting a flower in the pots? I think it makes the dirt pudding prettier when there is a flower placed inside it. There are several flowers that can be made (button flowers, coffee filter flowers, paper flowers, book flowers, clay flowers) and for a little more whimsey you van put a lady bug, butterfly or bubble bee (they may be available in gummy candy) on a piece of thin wire on the flower or floating above it. Congratulations to your daughter!! I like the idea of the individual Terra Cotta pots with dirt pudding.

You might try looking for some clay pots that don't have holes? Every now and then I've gotten some, though I don't know what size you're looking for. The other thing you might have to check out is if the moisture in the dessert will go through the pot. Depending on the size of the pot, there are little plastic beverage and/or dessert cups you could try to actually use as a liner in the pot. "Food for thought" ..
