Does anyone like IKEA kitchens?

We helped our homeowner remodel his kitchen with IKEA cabinets in order to give them a mid century modern feel to their mid century ranch home. They loved it. What do you think?
We stripped the plaster off the exterior wall to give the kitchen this industrial feel.
After relocating the gas stove we were able to install this microwave exhaust fan above the stove.

It's a very clean look. Nicely done. I really like the brick, too.

The folks I know with Ikea cabinets are very happy with them, and you can't beat the price point. This kitchen has a perfect mid-century color palette, and I love the exposed brick.
  • I am falling in love with mid-century currently so this is so pleasing to my eyes. A lot of folks have used them and don't seem to have a problem with Ikea cabinets.

Steve, I would like your opinion of the quality of the IKEA cabinets Thanks, gary
  • Thanks for asking, my experience with IKEA cabinets has been good. Personally I think that they are good as long as they are assembled, hung, and detailed correctly. They have very good hinges and drawer hardware. Their wide selection of door styles enable homeowners to create many varied looks. The way they hang on the wall is unique. I'm not a big fan of the rail system but it does seem to work well. I understand that in Europe your kitchen cabinets move with you when you relocate. The rail system would make them more portable. I was pleased with this mid century modern style kitchen, as well as another kitchen we did in a historic home. The historic home's kitchen had a totally different feel to it when we were done. Both kitchens have held up well. The mid century modern kitchen was featured on a local website for MCM enthusiasts and the historic styled kitchen went over well when it was on the neighborhood's home tour. When I need more variety, and higher quality, I either use UltraCraft cabinets or work with one of my custom cabinet makers.
  • I am always glad to share resources. The site is ModernPhoenix.net I have had multiple mid century modern remodels featured on the site. It has message boards and operates somewhat like HomeTalk for Mid century modern enthusiasts in the metro Phoenix area. http://modernphoenix.net/hobzaremodel.htm http://www.modernphoenix.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5166

No...they look ok in a LOFT-type setting but in a house??? NO.

I love the transformation. Like the brick. Makes it look so much bigger and lighter. Not my style but can appreciate the work that went into it. And in the end if the homeowner is pleased then you hit it out of the ballpark :)

I don't like the look for a home. Looks like it belongs in a business. To plain looking for me.

it's not for me at all, but it's a HUGE improvement over what they had. we've been thinking about IKEA cabinets for our kitchen. right now we have builder-grade thermafoil (is that what it's called?) and we hate it - can't wait to switch to solid wood. but with a 3 and 1 year old and a new house, IKEA is about the only price point we can manage without waiting 10 years to remodel.

I don't really like the white shiney cabinets, but I do happen to like IKEA. I have a solid wood coffee table and a solid wood, very sturdy dining table that I am using as a desk. My cabinets are white, but with brass pulls and one wall is actually a dark blue which reflects the light and a wicker hanging lamp that I found at a yard sale painted the same blue, with blue & white tiles behind the stove and sink. It is amazing what a little color can do.

It's a very clean, modern design but I prefer the IKEA kitchen in the attached photo. It's bright but it feels warmer and cozier than the modern design. For the kitchen I'm usually drawn to the beach cottage look which would go great with beadboard cabinets, wood counter tops and farmhouse sink.

It's the green, black appliances, one stainless steel appliance, dark wood colored counter top and glossy white combination that doesn't mesh well. It doesn't look like the walls were finished correctly and it seems that one of the lights switches isn't on correctly.

I don't care for this particlar style, but there are cabinets from IKEA that I like & appear to be of good quality.

I love their kitchens. I have my eye on one for the past couple of years and my hubby who worked in an expensive kitchen place have said that the quality that Ikea kitchens offer is comparable to the expensive ones, so no arguing there :-D

We redid our kitchen with Ikea and loved it--great price--beautiful cabinets--and really sturdy--I would go there again!

I don't like dissing other peoples decorating, but when i see IKEA advertisements in the magazines I immensely dislike them. Too bland.

Having been a kitchen designer in one of the big box stores for over 10 years, I can say that I really like the Ikea cabinets. I was able to glean a lot of ideas from their in store displays and am actually remodeling my kitchen using their cabinets. LOVE the drawers and all of the accessories they have for them. In other mfrs. cabinets, those kinds of upgrades command a hefty price. I don't particularly like mid century - I'm more of a 1920's-1940's kinda gal, but the kitchen looks much better after than before...
  • I have seen some lovely kitchens made from Ikea products, Great JOB!!

I have a concern about the weight the shelving can hold. I am not familiar with Ikea except what a friend has and her cabinetry is bowing under the weight of small appliances and cookware. The old ugly kitchen had been sturdier.
  • We used them in some rentals and I wasn't impressed with the quality or durability at all. To me, they are cheaply made cabinets. You can buy some fairly decent wood faced, plywood boxed cabinets if you hunt for them. Some of the other import stuff is much better....I have a couple of local distributors that we use for cabinets on our flip houses. To each his or her own but not a fan of the Ikea stuff at all.

I just love my Ikea kitchen. Installed 6 years ago. It's a high gloss white panel door. I coupled it with CeasarStone Martini Apple green counter top and a raspberry parfait colored back splash,,,I'm in heaven, in my kitchen!
  • Thanks for your input on your long-term experience with your IKEA kitchen. It's great to have input from Arizona!

We are in the process of installing an Ikea kitchen. My goal is for it to not look like an Ikea kitchen....while maintaining an Ikea budget. After pricing out other cabinets, we found that Ikea got us the same/better quality for a much lower price when compared to cabinets from Lowes/HomeDepot. One feature I liked was that I got to handle the design software on my own. With some tweaking to customize, their kitchens can be stunning. Here are a few examples of Ikea kitchens that don't scream "bland ikea." The last one is my favorite. :)
  • Great post Katie. These are awesome kitchens.
  • I agree with Lee Anne. thanks for sharing your collection of creative IKEA kitchens.
  • Nicely done Katie...if you can pull off the last kitchen, it's a great look. I'm not a huge Ikea fan....you can get better quality cabinets for around the same money right now. You just have to shop it or work with a kitchen designer who has the resources to pull it together under a budget. There are several locals who post on this site who can help you!
  • I am one of the Andy as you know, but when it is not in the budget Costco in Alpharetta has a program that provides a certified & qualified designer & crew.

Great post, and I love all the feedback. While I have never done one, I have quite an interest in it. I think that Ikea has it's place in the kitchen world... and in fact, a connection I have uses Ikea exclusively in her kitchen renovations. Great examples: http://www.eco-modernism.com/

Old post I know but I like them! I am about to use faux brick panels in my kitchen and paint my cabinets. I am going industrial. Now ....what color for the cabinets!

and actually, I have changed my mind about IKEA, especially since St Louis is going to be getting one next year. CANNOT Wait!

IKEA makes quality cabinets with great glides and hinges. If you assemble and install them correctly you should not have any issues. Remember all cabinets were knock-down at some point. Someone assembled every cabinet you see at the store. We have used IKEA cabinets exclusively for over four years in our buildouts.

It looks great. Not sure I would have gone with dark appliances. But the streamlined look of the cabinets is very period. Nice job

There is nothing wrong with Ikea cabinet boxes and internal hinges and hardware. However the drawer fronts and doors are cheap looking and there isn't a lot of variety. There are suppliers out there who have a wide variety of quality fronts for Ikea cabinets.

We installed a complete Ikea kitchen and countertop in our basement. We LOVE it-tge material, the style, the hardware, the design-every bit of it. And our guests love it too. I got a lot of compliments on it.
