Today's Sheet sizes: Do they EVER fit correctly?

I have an Easter King mattress, wider, but not as long as a Cal or Western King. When I can, I buy specifically for the Eastern, as Ralph Lauren sets. However, the bottom contour still looks a mess. There are two elasticized sides, and two selvage. Which should go lengthwise?

This is a problem we did not have 30 years ago...King was king and most were standard in thickness...now you have variations in height and well as California KIng, Olympic queen etc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bed_size if you find a set that works, get a few more of that same brand before they change. or you do what we do and just hide the poor fit under a big comforter.
