Epic Staircase Gallery Wall

After moving and redecorating a few times, I realized I had ended up with an incredible amount of picture frames. My new place had a long blank wall where the staircase wall was. I decided it was time for an epic staircase gallery wall!
The first thing I did was to gather up all the pictures and frames that I had. There were A LOT more than I thought!
The next step took a little but of time but in the end it was well worth the effort and made it super easy to plot out where I would hang the pictures! I traced the shape of each frame onto brown paper. Then I numbered each piece and also the frame with black permanent marker. Lastly, I drew a quick little sketch on the brown paper to remind me what each frame looked like.
Using painters tape, I affixed the paper to the walls until I found a configuration that worked. Then I took the corresponding frames and grouped them on the steps according to the numbers.
Finally, I started hanging the pictures. The frames were mismatched and I wanted something that would create a cohesive look making the gallery feel whole... Once I started hanging I decided I would paint some of the frames.
A side by side of the painting in progress. Some people maybe prefer the frames before but I had used them in different rooms already and had grown tired of the style and was very happy with the finished product!
Slowly the gallery begins to take shape.
A great pic of my supervisor who oversaw the entire project. :) Once the wall was all filled in, I placed white paper inside the frames with no pictures. Over time, I have been filling the frames with pictures, sketches, and autographs from friends and family.
I was absolutely in love with the finished product. The blank wall was filled and about 60 frames were pulled out of storage and put to use on the beautiful gallery wall.
On top of that, it was the perfect complement to the adjacent upstairs hallway! Thank you so much for taking a look at my project!

What was in the frames at first?

I love this, especially the painted frames with the color distributed throughout! How did you get up so high over your staircase? Do you have some special ladder for this?

I love this idea, I've been planning on doing the same thing but hadn't thought about painting the frames to match some of each other and my decor. I have so many frames and pictures I'd have no problem filling the frames I have. But I think I want to wait til I paint my place before I put up the frames. Or I could plan out where they were to go before I paint, do you think that would work?
