Sunflower Seeds

I planted these sunflower seeds in these containers...all is fine and they are coming up and thriving! But, if I were to put them in the ground now, the chipmunk(s) would devour them in one night! This happened up north after our dog was no longer around, and now it happens here in NC. Those chipmunks are drawn to sunflower seeds.... What to do? Has anyone had this problem? Leave them in plastic pots until they are 8-10" maybe? Lightweight mesh around them does not work...Any suggestions?

Did the chipmunks actually chew through the netting, or get under it? I would think bird netting, well-anchored to the ground, would do the trick.
  • So now I'm also dealing with zinnia seeds being partly munched away! I put bird netting all around that area last night...so we will see!
