furnace filters for dust?

My house seems to have more dust than I think it should, considering we have central air and don't keep windows open. Are there filters that can be installed that would help with dust?

Gail...furnace filters can vary from the 79 cent thin wimpy blue fiberglass types to 7 or 8 dollar HEPA pleated paper filters. The tight weave of the paper will catch more dust....but as a down side they will tend to "load" more quickly as they collect more particles than the more "open" blue filter media. Other things like your vacuum cleaner may contribute to air born dust...hepa filter vacs here also collect more fine dust that may blow through lesser models. I always used the 3M Allergen filters. Does help.

FYI: I do not use the 3M ones now, as we got a new HVAC system installed with Trane Clean Effects filter system; which requires no filters at the intake. However, I now use a washable simple filter at the intake to filter out the large stuff and cat hair, if I didn't use any filters at the intake, I'm sure I would later incur duct cleaning services for the intake ducts.
