I'm always glad to see green projects being highlighted, but I wish it could be viewed as other than a high-end option.

I agree, but I think most people assume going green has to mean going without, and these types of articles are a good reminder that green can be upscale.

It certainly can be. A custom, certified green house recently was built near me. Construction took a couple of years, even though it has one bedroom, and the cost per square foot would no doubt brings stares of incredulity.
