Woodn't You Like To Know--My Take on Butcherblock Countertops

Woodshop Diaries
by Woodshop Diaries
Since we remodeled our kitchen almost a year ago, I have had several people ask me about my countertops. Where did I get them? Do I like them? Did I make them? How do I take care of them? Etc.
There are ALOT of differing opinions online about butcher block countertops. Trust me. I researched EVERYTHING before I got them myself. Now that I’ve had them for almost a year now, I’ll share my personal opinion from my own experience.
1. What are they?

Maple wood.

2. Did you make them?

No. I explain the reason why in the blog post below.
3. Where did you get them?

Our cabinet guy knew a guy who knew a guy….seriously. Long story short, we got them from Bond Brothers in Illinois. Read all about it in the post below.

4. Did you install them?

No. We didn't want to take a chance on messing something up, so we hired someone to install them. Read more in the post below.
5. Were they expensive?

Nope. Thankfully, we got them for a very reasonable price. Don't believe people when they tell you butcher block counters are expensive :)

6. Do they stain easy?

In a nutshell, I'm still figuring this out. Some things I thought would stain them haven't and some things I thought wouldn't stain them have. I'll have to get back to you on that one :)

7. What do you mean by “oil” them?

Mineral oil and an old tshirt are just about all you need to keep the tops in good shape. Read more in the post below.
8. What about water?

So far, so good. Butcher block is somewhat "sensitive," so you do have to take extra precautions. But as long as you wipe up water and don't let it just sit there and you oil the tops properly, water shouldn't be an issue.

9. Do they scratch and/or dent easy?

Kind of. They are wood and not stone, so there is potential to dent or scratch it. Normal everyday use shouldn't be an issue, but if you drop something on it, it's likely to dent.
10. Do you like them?

Yes and no :) They are beautiful, but require some extra attention. Overall, I think I would do it again if given the chance. But mainly because of the price.

How are they holding up near the stove? I heard it is not a good idea to have b block right against the stove/range.

My husband made our Brazilian cherry counter top about 12 years ago before it was a "thing". I still love them. All it takes to keep them looking beautiful is a little oil. We use regular vegetable oil. It soaks right into the wood.

You can seal this type of wooden counter top but we chose not to do that.
