Spring Bling: A Cherry Blossom Table Makeover

2 Hours
Easy
One of my favorite things about living so close to Washington, DC is going downtown every spring to enjoy the world-famous cherry blossoms. The blooms are still a few weeks away, but when I found these cherry blossom napkins I just knew they were perfect to decoupage onto a table. Now I can enjoy a little DC springtime indoors all year round.
My cherry blossom table makeover is part of Hometalk's spring blog hop where dozens of home and garden bloggers are sharing spring home tours and DIY projects. To see more projects, just search for the hashtag right here on Hometalk.
Hooray for spring!
This little three-legged table was sturdy and had a cool shape, but it was beat-up and dated. It needed a makeover!
I found these cherry blossom napkins at the party supply store. They were perfect for decoupaging onto the panels that run around the little table.
I started by painting the entire table Soft White by Real Milk Paint Company. I added a product called "UltraBond" to the paint because I wanted a smooth finish. UltraBond is an "adhesion promoter" which means it helps the paint stick better and avoids that chippy look milk paint is famous for.

BONUS: We had one wonderfully warm spring day last weekend so I got to paint OUTSIDE. Then it got cold again. Boo!
I decoupaged the napkins onto the table with Mod Podge. Please visit my All Things New Again Blog and check out my Tips for Decoupaging Paper Napkins onto Furniture.

I did something new for me on this table. Once the Mod Podge dried, I distressed through the napkins with sandpaper. My mom loves this look. It makes me nervous! I just spent all this time arranging the napkins perfectly and smoothing out the air bubbles being extremely careful not to tear the delicate paper.

AND NOW YOU WANT ME TO RUN SANDPAPER OVER IT?!

I took a deep breath and did it anyway. It looks really cool. The sandpaper burnished the napkins so those cherry blossoms look like they have been on the table forever. It also distressed bits of the design so some white paint shows through. I sanded around the edges of the table to match the look.

Then I added my BLING! We are trying out a new metallic foil product called Dixie Shine from Dixie Belle Paint. I added some around the tabletop edge.
