Help with patio decor

My home is a townhouse. I need help decorating my under deck patio. The deck is elevated about 15 feet. The part of the patio space gets very little sun. The patio area is an L-shape. The patio is made of terra cotta colored brick pavers. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would make the area a Moroccan retreat by putting up gauzy outdoor curtains to hide the walls, paint the furniture in saturated colors while adding lots of patterned cushions, and an outdoor rug. Bring light to the space with hanging lanterns and a chandelier to show off the height.

On the walls with the window and door, paint giant bright flowers. Grass under the window with a big lady bug. The plain wall can have a big rainbow with a pot of gold. Paint the ceiling sky blue and the bricks grass green. I would paint the wicker white and add green and white striped cushions. That would certainly make it bright and cheery.

First thing I'd do is hang a chair swing or regular swing from the support beam. Curtains draped at the window. I recently spray painted my wicker a glossy black and it looks new. You can add festive cushions! It looks like you have a mold problem on the side wall. Bleach that off and your pavers before trying a rug. There are so many options with lighting. String lights, lanterns, chandelier. I'd paint the wood white or yellow to lighten the space. Shade plants would work.

I would paint the under side of your deck a blue, the posts white and hang sheer curtains. Paint the wicker white and add bright pillows, a chandelier would be beautiful. Maybe some iron work on the blank wall and if your pavers arent cemented in, pop in some other colors, or just paint a design on them. Plants of course

With the L shaped patio, this allows you to have two separate areas. I would use the portion of the patio directly off the sliding glass doors as a grill area. With the placement of the two poles, you could put a work area complete with storage between the two posts. From there, I would place a dining area on the left side of the straight patio and a seating area on the right. I love the idea of a swing, lanterns (do not have to be hung; can be tall ones placed on the ground), definitely put some curtains for privacy (can be made from drop cloths inexpensively), paint wicker and use bright colored chair pads, and various colored pots of all sizes grouped together containing coral bells, grasses, and potato vines for example. You have two posts that are rather close together off the right side area which would be an excellent place to leave open from the curtains for a grand entrance. I would suggest placing some type of header in this area as well as placing wall art on both sides of the window. You could build wall boxes out of scrap wood or pallet wood so that one box could cover the electrical box. You have a wonderful opportunity to have a private oasis. Enjoy!!

Plant some hostas in some large pots. They do very well in shade. There are a lot of different ones.

@Sheila Moore you have a great area and furniture to work with, lots of potential. A few things you may want to think about first. While it makes sense to have the eating and bbq area near the door, you need to consider safety (in regards to the bbq) as well as avoiding smoke from blowing in the house if your window or door is open. I would suggest perhaps putting that area outside of the covered area. I love the idea of curtains - they can provide privacy or hide areas you don't like to look at and you can choose a colour to go with everything else. Last week I bought some inexpensive sheers and hung them one over the other and held the ends down (to prevent too much blowing movement) with the ends of hockey sticks - working great. It provides privacy from our neighbour's kids as well as ambiance.Painting the furniture is a great idea, an easy way to add colour. Before choosing the colour - what are the colours in the cushions you are using or plan to buy. Choosing a colour that would mimic or enhance that pallet would be ideal. Lowes and Walmart also have some coloured chairs that are an outdoor fabric that are quite inexpensive, to add more seating - you might find one that goes with your colours. I would also group the chairs, sofa and tables to create a conversation area - you will love having your morning coffee or evening wine in this area (well at least I do LOL).An outdoor mat is a great way to define areas. Accents such as hurricanes with candles and lanterns can also add character to the space. If you want to add more interest on the walls you can usually find some really inexpensive stuff - sometimes even in your own basement or shed. Paint and hang an empty window frame, pick up some cheap iron/metal wall hangings and paint them the colour you want. Outdoor ornaments placed around the deck area - I am always on the look out for these - have found quite a few at homesense on clearance. Also when shopping look for different ways to use clearance items - a towel rack for a couple of bucks can always be repurposed outside as can many other items.Finally add some pots of colourful plants - can even get some tropicals cheap to put around the area as well.Don't be too quick to get it all done - this is a process that evolves over time, just pick where you want to start.Good luck and enjoy the journey and do update us and post pics - anxious to see it :)

Wow, thanks to everyone for the suggestions. This is my first time on this site. I didn't expect such quick responses. I was definitely thinking about painting the wicker furniture a dark brown. The cushions are different patterns in blue and yellow. I may change my color palette after reading all your great ideas. Thanks again.

great space.. I ws thinking along the lines of Douglas Hunts idea.. Paint the under part of the upper deck something bright,,,, it will open up the look. Curtain panels you can open and close depending on exposure and weather. Lights strung several directions, several bright colored pots at the edge of the pavers for some natural elements and to soften the lines of the overhead and posts.a fun party atmosphere.. Other idea, I'd use a theme or style as the inside of your house- making it a continuation of that decor. maybe even same color palette. If sleek and modern keep it to a minimum. big single swag light, modern sconces with batteries on each post. paint the wicker dark brown or black, add cushions in a bold geometric pattern, pick up a color in the fabric of that for the flower pots on the edge of the area. tall grasses add a bit of natural movement and come in various colors, some tall with a bit of draping ones to soften the edge of the overall space. A CHEAP way to do panels is painters tarps..... various sizes, grades, etc. trim them with accent colored fabric at top and bottom and tie backs. .. wash easily, durable for weather outside. also work great for the corners by the posts with sheers The painters tarps also work fantastic for a nautical beachy theme.. use rope as tie backs. white paint and navy chairs with stripes.. or light airy white and pastel blue for a beachy cottage feel... this space will be adorable however you do ut..Please keep us posted.. on you choices..
