Storing towels in linen closet

by Polly Zieper
We have a nice-sized linen closet with white coated wire shelves. The problem is that the stacks sometimes fall over and fall on the floor/out of the closet, and when a kid takes a towel it messes up the towels on top of the chosen towels. What would be more economical- bins/baskets for each stack of towels, or shelf dividers from the big box stores, that go with the shelves( same company)?

I found that towels that are rolled instead of folded didn't get all jumbled up. Put the end of the rolled towel towards the front of the shelf. This way a kid or a grownup can see all the towels at a glance and can pull out the favored one and leave the rest behind.

I use cardboard boxes that are the right size from Costco, and cut down the front and part of the side to make open-front bins. It's free, and if you don't like them, just take them out to the recycle bin. You can't actually see the box/bins when they have towels in them.

I learned from a smart woman, that each child should have six of their assigned color of towels. That way, no one can use anyone else's towels. No one pulls out towels from the bottom.

@Polly Zieper Yes, color coding worked for plastic "milk crate" toy bins and even plastic hangers. You mothers of multiples are super organized!!!

@Peppi Yes, my mentor and I expected the kids to launder their own towels. Six is the maximum for a washer to hold.

Put cardboard or foam board spacers between stacks

I'll roll the towels instead of folding and stacking them.

If you have the space, rolled and stored in a bin would be easy on laundry day.
