How I Doubled My Kitchen Counter Space... Thanks to a 2x4!

My kitchen is not large. Which actually means, my kitchen phone station eats up a good portion of the counter, much needed for other kitchen things.
Being that my day planner is a HUGE 3 RING BINDER, it was always buried under piles of riff raff, leaving no counter space anywhere near.
So I set out to design something that could incorporate said binder, plus win me some counter space back...
Thanks to a 2x4, here's how I did it...
Ohmypaperworkbegone, friends... I'm so in LOVE with this crazy little 2x4 shelf!
It's custom built to fit around that giant day planner binder, and I'm happy to report, I have room for kitchen stuff again!
I started with a cut down 2x4. I used angled screws to attach the boards, but if you have a proper jig, that's the way to do it. Or metal brackets. Or braced with wood...
The legs got really technical though... ready?
It took me a whole 5 min to remove these pipe fittings off a tray, then screw them onto this shelf.
Whew! Glad that's over with.
And then I couldn't leave well enough alone. Blank wood is a sign screaming to be made in these parts.
So I used my fav coffee stencil, tapped the 'very dry brush' to leave a sharp impression...

... added a funky handle and hinge, and ended up with this cool shelf!
I'm so in LOVE with this thing! It's got a cool industrial farmhouse vibe, don't you think?
And look how sweet it fits that big, honkin' binder!
Thrilled! Sometimes you just gotta custom make what you need so it works in your home.

Love it! I'd love to do a taller, longer version as a sofa console table using a rustic board I have. Do those pipe legs come in certain lengths with the threading already or do you have to cut to special size and have somebody thread it?

i just love it. I think this will make a perfect little station beside my coffee pot to store the coffee and filters underneath and the cups in the shelf.
