Is it ok to ask for the entire cost of the plants prior to purchasing?
How many follow-ups and what should I charge?

I am guessing that you are doing a landscape project for a paying client? If so, I'm not familiar with GA law, but would suggest contacting your Small Business Association and State for guidelines on Business Permits, insurance etc. etc.

@Romona are you a budding landscaper or is this a side business you are contemplating? Can you elaborate on if this is just a one time deal or if you are considering this as a business venture. I honestly don't know where to start. So I am going to answer them at face value:). It is absolutely OK to ask for the materials cost up front. You can even have the person do the purchase of the material and have them pay you for the labor only. If it is a simple job charge at least twice the cost of the material. (Remember this will be your labor, overhead, and future warranty and hopefully profit!) This is NOT the best way to run a successful business but it is easy and quick and can get you started in the right direction. Do one walk through with your client upon completion and have them sign off on a 'punch' list. Complete the punch list. If they ask for more work to be done at that point, then start a 'new' project. Be reasonable and realistic with your warranty. If they want a plant that is not going to reasonable survive in your climate, don't warranty it. If they insist on planting out ideal planting time (summer time with no water or irrigation) don't warranty it. Don't warranty annuals or tender perennials. Encourage your client to be responsible for the health of the planting. Don't plant something that is already in poor health or damaged because they want a less expensive plant.
