I actually had this exact problem last summer and they ruined my zucchini plant! What we did is bought some gardening wire at Lowes (much cheaper than chicken wire), and cut it into 5 squares. We secured it into a box shape so it was a cage for the plant. No more squirrel problems!
And make sure you bury the wire deep or else the little rascals WILL get underneath.

I just planted 75 bulbs in my raised flower bed today and just thought of this. I would hate to remove all the mulch and dig up my bulbs. I hope the little critters stay away.
