DIY Artwork Hanging Clips

We have a couple of pretty great little artists living in our household, and one of my favorite ways to decorate is with their pictures and sweet notes. We installed an IKEA wire in the playroom shortly after moving in. However...my lovelies (who are really, truly darn good kids most of the time) decided to try to zipline on the wire. Yes. Zipline. Our Addy has always been little, but that "zipline" couldn't even hold her weight. Imagine the scene: the wire pulled completely out of the wall, along with plaster. It was a complete mess.
We patched that disaster, and then eventually did a switch-a-roo and the former playroom became my new office (swapping the orange paint for a more calm gray). I wanted a new way to display the kids' artwork...one that would not be temping to play on. ;)
I gathered some simple supplies. I picked up these gold Nate Berkus binder clips at Target a few weeks ago. They were on clearance and I just felt like I would need them. Turns out I did...for this very project. I found two scrap pieces of wood (mine was pine) in the basement scrap pile, and pulled out my trusty pint of General Finishes Java Gel Stain.
The process was so simple. I sanded the wood pieces down with a sanding block. Then I applied one coat of the Java Gel Stain. Usually, when using this product, it takes a couple of coats, but I was really happy with the look of just one coat on this bare wood.

Then I used industrial strength adhesive to attach the Nate Berkus clips to the stained wood. I let that dry for a good 24 hours before hanging on the wall. I used command strips to hang them because I didn't anticipate that a great deal of weight would be placed on them (and hopefully no dangling children!)
All in all, I spent just over $5 for my two artwork hanging pieces. Definitely a simple and cheap project with a great outcome. I love this new space to hang the latest creations from my cuties.
