How do you get rust out of the toilet bowl and keep it out?

Spray Iron Out. Spray and leave sit for a bit. And spraying the inside of the tank is a good idea too!

If the rust has etched itself into the porcelain it's nearly permanent. CLR is great but it won't budge the ring once it's started. You can use an abrasive but it will etch the finish and more rust will collect. I would like to try Kathy's idea on my own Sir John Harrington.

i don't think it's possible to keep it out but IRON OUT does work very well. i didn't know it came in a spray but i put some of the powder in my tank every now & than. you have to remember to keep the lid down or door shut if you have pets (as we do).

Try denture tablets. Once the foaming stops, brush and see what happens.

Whink. Someone told me it would just melt the rust away. She brought some over for me to try and it was gone before I could even get the brush. It is great stuff. I never even heard of it before but now I always have it on hand.

I use "The Works". It comes in liquid and also a tablet you put in th tank. Start with he liquid, let it sit a few minutes, the scrub, and it should just fall off. I use the tablets all the time in the tank, and it keeps it sparkeling clean, without the nasty blue water. I swear by it.

I have the same problem but it doesn't look like rust but more brown. I called the toilet company and they said try distilled white vinegar or Bar Keeper's Friend. Take the water out of the toilet and spray cleaners and let sit. Hope it works.

I buy Whink at my local grocery. My grocer has it in the laundry section. It's in a brown bottle and is squeeze not spray. At least where I get mine. I've never seen spray. Also, my Walmart carries it. Fantastic stuff.

Also try Krud Kutter (sold at some stores, like Home Depot in paint dept.) It has worked on everything I tried it on. My ex had to move out of his house fast and asked if I could help clean. I'm not kidding, the formed bath/shower insert had 1/2" of caked soap scum and rust stains galore. Sprayed Krud Kutter, let it sit a bit, and all the crud melted away. Was able to take it all off with abrasive sponge.

I also have hard water (we have Culligan's and we still get the rust in the toilet!) and I use The Works and when I notice the orange starting to build up, I use bleach, then flush, then CLR or and of the iron-fighting cleaners that are out there. Whink is a great product btw.

I had to have a plumber plumb in 3 house filters and have Life Source Filter system put on my home. I change all filters every 3 months. Before, I replaced my Hot water Heater and all my toilets. I was out a lot of money but am happy now.

I have really rusty water from a Well, I use the works. empty the water out of the toilet, squirt in The Works almost no scrubbing. Then I use only Mortons Green in the Water Softner. Works great.

Thanks to all who responded. I have tried CLR and vinegar and other abrasive cleaners ( even steelwood pads). it keeps coming back. Sherrie, it is city water. I have been in the house for 9 years and this has been happening for a year now. I will find this Whink and see if it works. Thanks again all.

Just to let you know, Whink won't keep it away permanently. It takes away the stains but I need to use it periodically to maintain. I have also used the works and it does pretty well too. Personally, I think Whink may be a bit stronger. Oh and you're welcome! ;D

Using a Pumie scouring stick (Looks like a pumice stone) with acidic cleaner will get out etched in stains. It will not scratch the porcelain.

I also used a pumice stone but it did scratch some. I guess I got frustrateded and rubbed too hard. It just keeps coming back! I will try the other suggestions. Thanks for the support.

You can scrub it with a scotch brite and rubber gloves. Once it is clean, maintain it with clorox bowl cleaner. They make one for rust. it has an orange label. The clorox would help get rid of rust itself, it may take a few times.

I have well water and when I miss the salt running out- I get them too. The only thing that works well for me is the Lysol TB cleaner with rust and mineral remover (black and white bottle). I even use it in my tubs and sinks (rinse, rinse, rinse). Yes, they will come back if it keeps getting exposed to water. If the stains are really bad and thick, I drain the water from the bowl and apply and let sit. Brush and flush and repeat. Never takes more than twice even if it is heavy. You may want to look into getting a water softener if you want a permanent solution (at least till you run out of salt).

VP J - are you calling it rust because of the color? Iron causes a terrible rust look. I know because I have a well that makes a terrible rust color on anything it touches with the sprinklers.

I looked for Whink at the store but they didn't have it, so I got IRON OUT. I tried it for two nights with no results. I have ordered Whink off the internet. I will let you know.

RustAid will remove all iron with no scrubbing. You will have to drain the water before adding it. Nothing else I ever used worked. I use it on white PVC fencing that gets hit by the sprinklers.

K Mart sells Rust-away , usually in white jug on top shelve of cleaners, pour in bowl and put lid down, ventilate the area, this stuff works but it stinks real bad. Can be used to whiten white, really work.

Thank you all for your suggestions. After trying them with no results, I used a wire pad and elbow grease and removed it..It is clean as a whisle now and I hope to keep it that way by cleaning with beach each day.

If someone has not mentioned it, pour a can of Coca Cola, let it set, and scrub with a non-scratch scrubbing pad.

I used Bar Keeper's Friend - in the powder. The first time, I just put some in the toilet water and let soak overnight. In the morning you could already see a difference. I've even taken the water out of the tank and let soak, scrubbed it with a brush and it is all gone. I am very happy now.
