A dresser turned into a media center

I found myself with extra furniture pieces since moving in with my fiance and one of those pieces was a perfect condition dresser and night stand. I decided I would use the dresser as a media center in the family room, but I wanted it to add a splash of color to the plain white wall. This is what I started. What should I use to create a shelf for the empty space? I do plan to use this space for cable box, DVD player, etc (all these items are currently on the floor!).
This is what the dresser used to look like (matching nightstand)- I didn't take a picture before starting my project...
I removed the top two drawers and the hardware before painting the entire dresser with Dixie Belle Chaulk paint in "Barn Red". I then added a glaze and will wax it once it's complete.
This is what it looks like right now and before the wax coats (it will take two coats of wax).
I added random thicker coats of glaze to the edges to give it a rustic feel and now I need some shelves. I will also be replacing the original hardware with oil-bronzed hardware I purchased at Target.

I take it you want to put a shelf where the 2 top drawers were...??? Have you thought about taking the front off the 2 drawers, painting all the surfaces of the 3 remaining sides and bottoms, and then gluing them in place inside the openings...it looks like you have plenty of space. This area would not get a lot of moving things about so this could work well for you! You could glue a small strip between the 2 sections if need be once you have them in place!

HI user. I absolutely LOVE the china red color you chose for the cabinet. It compliments the cabinets design :) I would just slide in a piece of plywood and stain it red or even paint it black. If you can't get one piece in cut two pieces of plywood the cabinet looks like it already has the supports. I was trying to figure out if there is a center support in the back but the picture wasn't clear. If no center support just slide in the piece of plywood to fit and finish nail or screw in so it won't slide out. Make sure if you use a lower grade that you sand it down well to make it smooth :) Not sure of the drawer pulls you are using, but I love adding tassels to them :)

Hi if I'm understanding this question right you want to put your dvd player ect. on this shelf? If so the only thing is you are going to have all the cords showing. I would try to figure out a place in your cabinet to keep them there, I'm sure its possible. My Idea for shelves above your cabinet would be something like these photos I put below just for an idea go and look more at them on Pinterest.

Hi Sandra. The shelf would be for the electronics, but the cords will not show. The dresser does have a back panel that was removed for painting purposes. I am going to drill holes in the back panel to run the cords through.

Love the color and great idea. Wood shelf would be easy to install, or can you just take the fronts off the drawers.

Thank You Kathy Bitzan. The drawers were so hard to remove that we had to break the hardware to do it. I think we're going to try the plywood idea or taking the wood from the drawers' sides and backs and see if they will work.

I would suggest a piece of 1/4 inch of 1/2 inch furniture grade plywood. I know our local Home Depot has pieces that are cut in smaller sizes and there may be one that you could use as the shelf. That way you would not have to buy an 8' piece for just one shelf. The plywood would be able to take to weight of the electronics and both sides are usually finished so it is a matter of cutting to fit, fine sanding and finishing. You may want to consider the possibility of mounting a power strip (with circuit breaker) either on the back of the shelf or on the back of the unit then into your wall outlet. Just a thought... Not sure that the two drawer pieces are all finished enough to make your shelf. Drawers are usually smaller than the depth and width... like you see the drawers you have in the unit.

Thank You Lynn Palmatier. I am going to buy the plywood tomorrow and try to complete this project already! Four days are too long of a wait for me!

Ok I'm hoping someone has made something out of a " saw horse " ? I found one in a basement with it a little bigger than ones I have seen! So guessing it's old especially the top! It could easily be a table for behind couch & just sanded and add polyurethane to it? I'll post a picture as soon as my son gets over to bring it to my place , would LOVE ANY IDEAS that anyone could come up with ? I like the old barn look or anything I've seen redone which all you ladies have great ideas! Thank you so much for posting DeeDee ( menzock@live.com )
