Fireplace Facade

My son and girlfriend's new house. They didn't like the fireplace, wasn't "rustic" enough for them. They asked me what I could do to fix it.
I took apart some old crates they got on Craigs list for free! And we stained them 3 different stains
I added strips of wood to the facade, to nail the stained boards to.
Then we cut and nailed all the boards to the fireplace. Who knew I knew how to do this!
BTW, I also cut down two of the crates to 9" wide and made the bookcases on the sides! (We did hide the wires after, but I don't have a picture of that)

Are you not concerned about the fire hazard of wood too close to the fire? You should have 24" clearance of non flammable surface around a fireplace.

Love what you did with the mantel it looks great but I was wondering where you got the steer skull? I love it and would love to have one like it. You really are creative and the bookcases add just the right touch! Thanks!

Couldn't the wood be sprayed or coated with a fire retardent? Just wondering. I really like the different stains, and expecially the marble. I'd like it in a tad lighter shades, but that is just me. You did a very nice job. Your son must be pleased.
