I am redoing an old dresser into a kitchen island and want to do it with some kind of metal or some kind of wood ideas.

I would see if you can find a metal stick on tile for the top of your piece. Try looking in Home Depot.

There are laminates that looks like wood that would be easy maint and food friendly or perhaps a top with a glass overlay of whatever you want or an epoxy encasement of corrigated metal might be super cool

so much depends on what you can afford, how big is island, etc. I was lucky and found an old marble kitchen table that I stole the top from and put in on top of the new island base. You can concrete a new top, peel and stick tiles, wood flooring, paint a countertop, or use a roll of laminate. Epoxy is nice but beware it melts with heat, no hot pans directly on it! You can always do something inexpensive until you can upgrade at a later date.

I would go with a butcher block top..... they always look so elegant and warm...google for some pictures to see if it will fit your design.... good luck

HI, I just bought an island for my kitchen that was black and had a butcher block top, I was not fond of the butcher block as it did not fit with all of my décor, so I had a company that does formica make a top cover that fits right over the top of the butcher block, I love it!!! Matches my room and still have the option to use the butcher block in the future if I want. Cost my around $80 but it was worth it. This might be an option. Good luck

I don't know your style, but I would consider galvanized or old barn roofing on the back of the dresser (usually they need a good back) - depending on the height & if it has legs or is solid I might add a lower shelf in barnwood or tobacco barnwood (in NC we can get old tobacco barn sticks) & then do the top in that... Have fun & good luck with it! Oh, you might consider adding a few wrought iron pieces to it, too - maybe a plant hanger as a towel rod or wrought iron hooks for mits, adding a pot rack above?
