Impatiens and Powdery mildew

The landscape company at the condominiums where I live told us that impatiens have been infested with powdery mildew and suggested that we not buy any. They said the major suppliers are not carrying impatiens this year because of that. Anyone else heard anything about it?

Well, yes I have. And yes I have some beautiful Impatiens in stock right now. Europe has a major problem currently with infected stock. Florida has shown some as well. The products coming from Ohio and other northern states is clean so far. Will it eventually hit us? Maybe. This Year ? Doubtful, but who knows. The big seed companies are working hard to come up with solutions even as wee speak. Impatiens are the number one bedding crop in the country, so you can bet they are doing everything they can to keep them clean. You can read some pretty dire prediction on the web right now though. So bottom line, yes you can find clean Impatiens right now, but if you are not comfortable buying them, then use an alternative.

FS - what alternates would you suggest beside begonia?

You could use Torenia, or Browallia, maybe some Ageratum, Fuchia, and of course Coleus. I like Balsam as well , if you can find it. Snapdragons will take some shade as well as Nicotiana. Off the top of my head I can't remember how much shade Angelonia can take, but I think it will take some.

Downy mildew is a big problem here in Florida. SunPatiens and New Guinea impatiens are not susceptible.
