I am looking for ideas for my stairway

As of right now, its open and there is a window at the bottom. I don't care for the regular products found in the stores. Something a little different is what I am looking for, but also not too crazy.

Not sure if your decor has modern elements, but could check out stainless systems http://www.indital.com/Stainless-Steel-Railing-s/1514.htm

Put drawers under stairs & look on Pinterest for ideas. Also, iron railing.

In some areas of the country is against the building code to go without a railing. So maybe deciding what type of railing you'd like will help you determine your décor. Check out bloggers whose styles you admire and imitate their choices. If you are looking for something more untraditional, check out Donna over at FunkyJunkInteriors.net Her style is unique and whimsical and she uses a wrought iron/wood railing. She has a whole posting dedicated to her staircase.

With the advent of International building codes several years back, EVERY open staircase must have railings. The distance between the posts is also regulated by these codes - specifically designed to prevent children from being trapped or worse. Even if you don't need a permit, please keep in mind that these simple guidelines must still be followed. Call your city permit office for specific guidelines and dimensions.

The above answers are great ones. My questions are, is your decor country, traditional, soft contemporary, etc? What about the walls. Are you stripping off the wallpaper and painting? What color? What about the window treatment and the light fixture? You may want to consider a railing with clear plexi-glass underneath. Please google something like, "stair railings" or something like it and do a lot of research. Good luck with your project and maybe you will share the end result. Would love to see it.

I found a lot of unique plumbing and cable banisters. it would be a good contrast to the wood you have and if you have a light color it would set off the railing and wood. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/307370743292281420/

I look at the ceiling and it seems so low! Just the angle of the pic. I assume. Are you intending to paint the stairs and walls. Light colours give a room 'space' . Look on the web for some stunning ideas for stair deco. some great ones out there. Have you thought of drawers in the steps The walls by stairs are a great place to hang photos of family and fave. memories, olde signs, etc.. Railings as per safety code. The turn at the bottom of the stairs is a feature. Tiny homes sites - have great ideas for using unusual spaces for storage. Also does the window have to be covered with a curtain? or can it have another treatment to let in the light - so sensible near a stairway.

Thanks for the suggestions. As far as drawers under the steps, that not an option. We are replacing all the drywall in the stairway at some point (I hope soon). We are not painting the stairs, because we just stripped them back to the wood. Thank you !!!!
