As far as the "inexpensive" paint goes, Lowe's has a good paint for little money (compared to Sherwin Williams). Lowe's paint has a built in primer, making one coat cover it all.

If the color of the paint already on the wall was darker than the paint to be applied, would a paint with built in primer be effective or would it still need to be primed?

Here I think you need a pro to advise you. Lowe's product is so new, to me anyway, I've not the experience to advise.

Brad, I think you are probably likely to save money by priming first. If you are trying to paint directly over a darker color, it will probably take more coats of paint if you don't prime first. I always use Sherwin-Williams, but it's certainly not the cheapest option.
  • Different taupes work well with grey - and of course classics like white or black are great accents and really "pop" if you're looking for good resale value. Grey is a neutral and it would be hard to go wrong! Hometalker Peace Painting is a great resource for you on priming / lost cost paint - however we agree sherwin williams is one of the best options but not lowest cost. If you don't prime you will certainly need a minimum of two coats.
  • Use some Zinser 1-2-3 latex primer and tint just enough to turn the color using the final coat paint you wish to use. You should be able to get by with one coat of primer and one coat of paint. The real "cost" of painting is the labor and not the paint. I typically avoid the self-priming paints except on really dark accent colors....or I prime coat with black before top-coating.

Brad, Sher-Wms Promar 200 is their best in the contractor line of paints and is very good paint for the money. It covers in fewer coats and goes further. Best, Charles

I know Behr is not one of many people's favorite paints but I use it regularly and have not had any issues. Recently covered a cherry red with a light blue in my bathroom with the Behr primer paint. It covered in one coat well but I always do 2 because there are always spots that get missed. If the paint is too thick add some Floetrol to lay down nice.

I hear that Home Depot's Glidden paint is really good. Haven't tried it yet myself, I"ve used Behr, but they say this Glidden is way better than the Behr.

Laura and Angie, Behr and Glidden are not 'bad' paints and are good for what you pay for them. They have their niche. Many homeowners like the price. If you go to a paint store you will likely pay double for a gallon. The curse of the professional is that they know too much about the differences. Chas.

Don't buy the ones that say paint and primer in one. It does not work, if you paint and need a primer, get the primer and then pain over the primer. Glidden is good, Behr isn't really bad either.
