This is what I started off with - a thrift store find (we got it at Goodwill!) that I knew could be transformed with a little bit of love.


I started off by using craft paint to paint all of the oceans black. I didn't worry too much about geography, here - this globe won't be used for accuracy (sorry, Hawaii).

Once the paint had dried, I used gold leaf to fill in all of the continents. It took some patience, and made a huge mess, but when I was done...
...I ended up with a gorgeous globe that makes a huge statement in my living room! I'm obsessed with how it turned out, and it has totally inspired me to do another globe project soon (I already have the globe waiting, just need to decide how I want to alter it!).     I have an old school globe with a dull aluminium base. I wonder if silver leaf would work with maybe a dark navy paint? Did you seal the paint & leaf with anything?
