DIY 'Where We've Been' Map

My husband and I wanted a way to record the places we've traveled together. I used an old bulletin board and covered it with decorative wrapping paper.
Using a template, I cut an outline of the United States out of cork and applied that onto the wrapping paper.
Pins mark our places, and a diamond earring stud marks our wedding location. It's fun to display in our office alongside some of our other maps and globes.

We'll have a great time looking back at all the places we've traveled.
A diamond marks the island of Kauai, Hawaii where we were married.

Did you cut the outline of the map out before attaching it to your cork board? Would a cardstock or wrapping paper with USA flags on it be too busy for this as a background? Maybe famous pics of famous places along the side..say for example, in NYC the Statue of Liberty, In Seattle, the Needle(never been there, can't think of what it is called. Washington, DC could be any of the monuments or The White House. San Francisco could be the street car or the crooked road. Gosh, I loved San Francisco. Would love to go back there. Niagara Falls, Florida could be many things. How can you be sure the push pins stay in the corkboard? I'm good for walking around barefooted or with thin bedrroom slippers. Don't need to step on one of those. What is the size of your corkboard?

I cut the outline of the map first yes. My background is quite busy to me (personally) but I like the overall look. You can choose whatever background appeals to you most :) I love your idea of adding some of the monuments, maybe you could find minatures of them? My square board is a cork board as well as the map itself being made of cork-so with two layers for the pins to go through, I wasn't too worried about them getting damaged or falling out. My corkboard is 3ft by 4ft or so a good size in my opinion.
