my husband saids inside window frame, I say out side 2" above window anyone want to solve this one.

I think it depends what you are hanging. Cellular shades and the like are most energy-efficient if they are hung tightly inside the window frame. For aesthetics, a lot of people hang curtains above and outside the entire window frame.

What are you hanging? What is the ceiling height? What is the height of the window? and how far from the ceiling? All of these are contributing factors to what might be your best solution.

above the window frame near the ceiling to make room looking larger. also,more private to cover the whole window and dark the room at night time.

Also, hanging outside the frame provides better privacy. Always think of the perspective of the window(s) to the wall; to the room; to the furnishings seeking "balance".

Great ideas the room has 10ft ceiling and the window is about 2 ft from the ceiling I am hanging drapes that are 83 in long have a blind in the window there is a sofa in front. thanks for all the replys.

I'm dealing with 11' ceilings in my room, with double stacked windows that end about 16" from the ceiling and continue to about 18" from the floor, as well. I can't afford custom curtains and even the 120" ones aren't long enough and cost a fortune. I'm buying 95" curtains and adding a coordinating fabric to the bottoms so that I can mount the curtains to hang from ceiling to floor height. I have white faux wood blinds as inside mount for privacy, and hanging drapes floor to ceiling, with the rods hanging over about 4" wider than the window itself. Floor to ceiling always gives a more finished look than having them stop short. Take a look at some decorated rooms in magazines and online and find a look that you like and copy it. Floor to ceiling will help accentuate the ceiling height, making the room look bigger than if the curtains stop short, which stops your eye. Can you post of picture of the windows you are covering? There are some great designers here who could give great input if they know what you are seeing.

Based on your measurements hanging them means the drapes will be 1' above the floor - is this intentional? Will there be a valance? Or are these going to be side panels only? Posting a picture may be very helpful too! Surely an interior designer with a great deal more experience than I will chime in soon :)

well that was smart! That being the case, without a valance .. I would put the rod just above the window trim. If you go higher the windows will look shorter/odd. If you can get a long enough rod so the drapes can be pushed outside the windows you will get maximum amount of light when you want/need it! In addition, it will keep the light from sneaking in at the sides when they are closed

Outside window frame, the farther up you hand your curtains the higher it makes your ceilings appear, which will make the room seem larger. Outside will also make the window look larger which can be beneficial if your want a more substantial look.
