Old wat-not shelf

I have an old wat-not shelf that was in my room as a kid, and my mom painted it white, and i've always loved it - but now its kinda chipped up and... well... i was going to try and restore it to original finish - but shud I just leave it kinda shabby and old looking with the white paint?

Depends on what you like! If you are going to restore it, it is a lot more work--you have to strip off the old paint, then stain (if you want to change the color) and protect, with varnish or polyurethane.

yes, i would be a major project because there are many "cutouts" and nooks/crannies. Right now it has the shabby sheek look ... but it matches nothing in the house. But maybe thats its charm. I just dont want it to look bad.
